Abstract

PROBLEM: the productivity of pig farms can be affected by the low efficiency in the management of selection of females that form the active reproductive herd, given that sometimes a complete analysis of the mammary gland of the sows is not carried out, without noticing the presence of supernumerary teats and bad conformation of the same in the mammary line, a situation that is complicated according to the number of births of the breeders. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the state of the mammary gland of the females of the porcine active reproductive herd and its relationship with the number of deliveries. METHOD: the mixed-type study was carried out in a pig farm, through the analysis of live animals and the records of 423 Topigs Norsvin (TN60) sows, where the state of the tissue and the mammary line of active breeding females are described and classified and its relationship with the number of births. RESULTS: the evaluation allowed us to observe that problems in the shape and functionality of the mammary glands affect 16.55% of the population, even reaching parameters of "non-functional", a situation that is accentuated as the number of deliveries increases in the animal. CONCLUSION: When evaluating the mammary glands, it was observed that active reproductive females are affected in their form and functionality as there is an increase in the number of farrowings, mainly in active sows from the third farrowing onwards.
