Quality in research products in Mexican and Guatemalan peer-reviewed scholarly journals

AIMS: To assess the quality of research products in recently created Mexican and Guatemalan peer-reviewed scholarly journals. METHOD: This study employed a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional research design. It was gathered a convenience sample that consisted of 20 studies from Mexico and 10 from Guatemala, one per journal created in 2021. It was created an index based on Mårtensson et al. (2016) research quality model. RESULTS: It was found that research quality aspects such as credible, contributory, and conforming, plus the rigorous indicator scored low. However, the communicable aspect scored high. CONCLUSION: I concluded that quality in studies in recently created peer-reviewed scholarly journals is low. I recommend publishers to address these issues rejecting low-quality studies and/or providing feedback to authors in order to improve the study. Likewise, I suggest authors to implement good research practices.
