Abstract

The objective is to analyze the construction, by the executive branch of Costa Rica (especially in the figure of the president of the republic), of the concept of peace, between the years from 1979 to 1990. By historicizing the trajectory of the concept, in the different speeches expressed by presidents Rodrigo Carazo, Luis Alberto Monge and Oscar Arias Sánchez, it is expected to have a vision of how peace was used and instrumentalized in order to establish a world view in which Costa Rica was (re) presented as a democratic window in a context of violence in Central America, within the framework of the Cold War. This is also expected to identify the construction of a national identity, typical of Costa Rica, where peace was linked to other elements that sought to highlight the civilian tradition of the country. Theoretically and methodologically, the paper is based on the concepts of the History of Concepts, Critical Discourse Analysis and Content Analysis. By using them, it is expected to have a better understanding of how concepts allow you to save and retain experiences, even when you are already it has disappeared.
