Clinical characterization of patients with abortion at the National Hospital of Jalapa

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical characteristics of abortion patients admitted to the prenatal complications service of the Nicolasa Cruz National Hospital in Jalapa, during the years 2019 to 2023. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 257 patients. A review of medical records was carried out and a data collection slip was used to document the personal information, obstetric and gynecological history, type of abortion, treatment and pathological history of each patient. The data were analyzed and graphs were generated for better understanding and interpretation. RESULTS: 54% of the patients were 30 years of age or older, 46% had primary education, 91% were housewives, 67% were Catholic, 76% were in a common-law union, 82% had a first-trimester pregnancy, 77% had an incomplete abortion, 31% received double therapy, and 80% had no history of pathology. CONCLUSION: The highest percentages are women over 30 years of age, housewives, Catholics, multiparous, with pregnancy in the first trimester who predominantly present incomplete abortion, receive treatment with misoprostol and uterine curettage without a pathological history, but eventually with urinary infection and/or anemia. It is necessary for the National Hospital to strengthen epidemiological surveillance by implementing a detailed registration system for abortion cases, up to their evolution at discharge, to identify trends, evaluate the effectiveness of treatments and detect possible areas for improvement.
