Abstract

PROBLEM: The evolution of vena cava filters in the last two decades has led to an expansion in their indications, allowing a greater number of patients to benefit from the prevention of pulmonary embolism. OBJECTIVE: Describe the indications for vena cava filter placement. METHOD: A search of the existing literature was carried out on websites such as UpToDate, Elsevier and PubMed, to carry out a bibliographic review with the objective of identifying the indications for vena cava filter placement, using the terms indications for vena cava filters. RESULTS: The indications for vena cava filters are classified as: classic, relative and prophylactic. The only classic indication recognized by all guidelines is that of a patient with venous thromboembolism in whom anticoagulant therapy is contraindicated, causes complications, or has failed. CONCLUSION: The relative indications are not supported by prospective data and are based on specific risks of complications from venous thromboembolism. Prophylactic indications have not been more robustly studied and not all guidelines recommend them; however, a large number of patients in specific populations have benefited from the use of inferior vena cava filters.
