Abstract

PROBLEM: dexmedetomidine is a drug used in critical patient units and during the perioperative period. However, there is a need to describe and understand its current implementation in these contexts, as well as to assess benefits, adverse effects and specific applications. OBJECTIVE: to describe the implementation of dexmedetomidine in critical care patients and during the perioperative period. METHOD: a thorough research of medical articles and secondary sources was carried out, with critical reading of them, and relevant information was extracted and organized.  RESULTS: dexmedetomidine proves to be a valuable therapeutic option in intensive care units and during the perioperative period. Its appropriate use can improve the quality of sedation, pain control and clinical outcomes of patients. However, careful consideration of potential adverse effects and patient-specific conditions is necessary before implementation. CONCLUSION: the current implementation of dexmedetomidine in patients during the perioperative period and in intensive care units has relevance; its application has been substantiated by the ability to provide adequate sedation, exceptional pain management, and maintain hemodynamic stability in such settings.
