Abstract

PROBLEM: During the climacteric period clinical symptoms are exposed as a resulto of a decrease in estrogen, this hormonal disorder manifest itself with the presence of vasomotor, psychological, urogenital symptoms. Hormone replacement therapy has been implemented for the treatment of the main clinical symptoms during the climacteric period. OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of hormone replacement therapy in women during the climacteric period. METHOD: A review of articles and scientific studies as perfomed. RESULT: Hormone replacement therapy in women during the climacteric period is indicated in patients with estrogen deficiency as a consequence of ovarian hormonal dysfunction. The initiation of therapy provides benefits to different cardiovascular, genitourinary and bone systems, by reducing symptoms that affect the quality of life of patients. CONCLUSION: The main drugs used in hormone replacement therapy are estrogens; progestogens are also used due to the proliferative effect of estrogen on the endometrium, so each patient should be individualized based on the risk factors collected in the anamnesis, for an adequate therapeutic choice.
