Dilation of coronary arteries due to Multisystemic Inflammation Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) Post COVID-19

PROBLEM: In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) emerged, linked to SARS-CoV-2 infection. This triggers an inflammatory response that affects various organs, especially the heart in 80% of cases. This inflammation weakens the coronary arteries, increasing the risk of serious complications. OBJECTIVE: To describe the dilation of coronary arteries due to Multisystemic Inflammation Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) post COVID-19. METHOD: A synthesis of relevant information was carried out based on scientific articles on the physiological mechanisms and current treatments to address this condition. RESULTS: Treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach that involves intravenous anti-inflammatories, management of cardiogenic shock, and ventilatory support in the intensive care unit, with the primary purpose of mitigating inflammation and restoring the functionality of compromised organs, ensuring effective recovery, and preventing long-term complications. CONCLUSION: Coronary artery dilation in post-COVID-19 Childhood Systemic Inflammation Syndrome (MIS-C), although rare, primarily affects patients of Black and Hispanic ethnicity due to a virus-induced imbalanced inflammatory response.
