Abstract

A serological study was carried out in search of antibodies against common etiological agents, in patio hens (Gallus gallus) of the village El Caoba (AEC), located in the buffer zone of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, in Petén, Guatemala. Randomly, blood samples from 39 hens were taken. Antibodies against the avian influenza virus type A (VIA), the Newcastle disease virus (VENC), the Gumboro disease virus (VEG), the Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) bacterium and the Salmonella pullorum bacterium ( SP). 46% of the hens studied carried antibodies against VIA; 51% against the VENC and 95% against the VEG. No antibodies against MG or SP were detected. Antibodies against CNVV were only detected during the September sampling. 31% of the hens sampled carried, concomitantly, antibodies against three pathogens (VIA, VENC and VEG) and 15% against two pathogens (VENC and
VEG). It is considered that the dynamic population of AEC patio hens represents a potential threat to artisanal poultry farming, technified poultry, wild birds and the human population.
